During the 1800s in England and Ireland, sewing instruction books to be used by teachers and pupils were published, their purpose being the “production of competent rather than creative needlework. Many schoolbooks of needlework exercises have survived from the nineteenth century. Typically they include a variety of small samples demonstrating plain sewing and embroidery techniques.
